Children & education
School system, Grundschule, Gymnasium, Realschule, Hauptschule, Kita, enrollment
Summary
The German education system differs fundamentally from the Dutch. After primary school (Grundschule, 4 years), children are separated at age 10 into different school types: Gymnasium (pre-university), Realschule (intermediate), Hauptschule (vocational), or Gesamtschule (comprehensive). This early selection is a shock for many Dutch parents. Childcare (Kita) is heavily subsidized and free in some states.
