Health insurance
Statutory (GKV) vs Private (PKV) health insurance, AOK, TK, Barmer
Summary
In Germany, health insurance is mandatory (Versicherungspflicht). There are two systems: gesetzliche Krankenversicherung (GKV, statutory insurance) and private Krankenversicherung (PKV). Most employees automatically fall under the GKV. The German system differs fundamentally from the Dutch: there is no deductible, the premium is a percentage of your gross salary (not a fixed amount), and your employer pays half. The GKV covers more than the Dutch basic insurance — including pediatric dental care, physiotherapy, and maternity care.
